Sony PCG-U101 English XP install

This guide is for information only, It works for me, but might not work for you
close this browser windows now if you don't agree to the terms

first in Japanese XP, copy the "drivers" folder & your XP CD contents to the D-Drive partition and run "setup.exe"
You can follow this guide, it might be helpful.
OR
if you have a bootable Sony CD-ROM,
(I used the Sony PCGA-CD51/A ... $149 USD)
After copying the "driver" folder to the D-Drive partition, just install normally

Then follow these steps:

Install Language support for Asian languages
Under the "Customize" tab select East Asian Languages
select Japanese
Set the default UNICODE to Japanese & Add Japanese text input support is you want.
After installing Windows XP the drivers will need to be installed. (most are not detected by XP)
First, we can install the ATI video, LAN-Express Wireless LAN and Synapsis Pointer stick drivers simply by double clicking their "setup.exe" files
Other drivers will need to be manually installed...
like so:

Control Panel

Classic View
Device manager
right click "Ethernet Adapter"
Update driver
Intsall from a specific location
Browse to driver folder
(I put all drivers on D-Drive partition).
Finish
right click "Multimedia Audio Controller"
update driver
Intsall from a specific location
Browse to driver folder
(I put all drivers on D-Drive partition).
right click "SM Bus Controller"
update driver
Browse to Chipset folder in the driver folder
(I put all drivers on D-Drive partition).
After installing Windows XP Service Pack 1a,
install the USB 2.0 driver
install from specific loaction
don't search, I will choose
choose USB controller
select the Intel driver
now this part's done. next install the Sony devices and setup Japanese keyboard mapping if you want to.

(all* these are on the Japanese U101 recovery CD 3 of 3)

1# Sony Shared Library (English/Japanese)

2# Sony DV shared Lib (English/Japanese)

3# Sony UI Lib (English/Japanese)

4# Sony Utill DLL (English/Japanese)

5# Sony Notebook Setup (English/Japanese)

6# Sony Power panel (English)* let me know if you need this - any versions should be ok - can be downloaded from Sony USA and others

7# Sony HotKey (English/Japanese)

8# Applications from Recovery CD or custom Apps CD
Copy "VAIO Application Recovery Utility" from Japanese, and paste it to look exactly like this

C:\Program Files\Sony\VAIO Application Recovery Utility\
Insert your Sony Application Recovery CD and all the Japanese software can be recovered.


Hotkeys all working (120kb JPEG)
(Thumbphrase too if you want that Japanese only application)
Zoom & Rotate working under English XP (220kb JPEG)
